Need Help Identifying (I Believe) British Hallmarks

Post by CarriageHouse »

Hi -

I'm wondering if anyone can help me identify these two marks on the base of a pair of candlesticks...

I believe they are British...but the family history/background is Hungarian.

the Minerva mark is Austria Hungaria, There is a letter in the mark. That letter tells which assay office.

Hi,

Austro-Hungary domestic silver hallmark, the head of the mythological goddess Diana, facing right. A key to identifying these silver hallmarks is the crescent moon on Diana’s head, large silver 1872-1922. The number 3 indicates silver .800 fineness and the letter A; regional assay office of Wien/Vienna Austria. The makers’ mark unknown to me.

Wow, that's greatly appreciated...so glad I asked, I didn't see the details mentioned.

Thank you.

Hi Steve,

Can you post some images of the whole pieces?

It is possible that they are the work of J.C. Klinkosch, but overstruck with the marks of another.

A couple of possibilities for the 'JB' mark: Johann Berlak or Josef Böhm, both Vienna silversmiths.

No furher details on Berlak, but Böhm's details are:

BÖHM, JOSEF

Silberschmied

Gewerbsverleihung: 1888

VIII, Lerchenfelderstraße 156 (1885 - 1886);

VIII, Lerchengasse 27 (1887);

V, Nevillegasse 2 (1894 - 1898)
