UNUSUAL HALLMARKS,ITALIAN??

Post by phil3115 »

Hello everyone,
My name is Phil and I am a silver collector from Norwich England, I collect unusual items of silver and hopefully can both post in need of help and can help others especially with English early silver.
Below is my latest acquisition which I am confused over, it has the look of Italian silver and is hand plenished, the mark appears to be a date letter or makers mark and a town or duty mark which looks like a bulls head over an 8.
Does the board feel it is Italian or is it one of those pesky Hanau marks? I date it as late 18th or early 19th from the look and construction.
Many thanks and pleased to be a member.
Phil

Hi Phil,

Welcome to the forum. I checked my references, however to no avail. My first thought; Dutch guild marks for Groningen; rubbed date letter 6th or 8th alphabet and maker’s mark but no. I checked Tardy but I could not find a match. Than I thought spurious marks but that should be the easiest way out and now I do hope some one can tell us more!

Hi,

Yes, Theodrich you are right! Thanks, I never saw the ‘flowery b’ before but I do recognize the so called ‘bulls head over an 8’, it is the number [s455], see J.D. Schleissner & Sohne [s455]

Best wishes,

Hello Theodrich & Oel,
Many thanks for your time on this, you are of course correct. I had completely missed it when I went through the Hanau marks.
Now I have to decide whether to get the bad repair sorted out!
All the best
Phil
