Set of Wine Labels

Post by bstaunto »

Hi team,

Just had a few questions about these.

Its a set of four labels. I think the maker is James Wintle, but this doesn't seem to match up with the date letters.

1) Three of the four are hallmarked on the front - did this happen much in the Georgian period? I'd thought it was generally twentieth century pieces that were hallmarked on the front.

2) Are the date letters 1809 and 1810? (I think what I thought was a B is actually a P with some extra on it). But I think James Wintle only registered his mark in 1821?

3) I can't find any other examples of this snake pattern on the outside, has anyone else seen other examples?

Any comments, thoughts, reflections much appreciated!

I agree with you that the dates on these labels are 1809 and 1810. I also agree that I·W is not James Wintle. Wintle's first mark in 1812 was J·W and the I·W mark was not used, as you point out, until 1821. Grimwade does not illustrate any marks matching your I·W until we get back to a mark registered in 1788 by John Whittingham, smallworker, but this punch appears to have cut corners. I think that the best candidate may be John Williams, bucklemaker, whose mark was registered 13.11.1790.

I also feel that the back of wine / decanter labels is the more usual place to find hallmarks, but I have no hard evidence to back this up.
