Difference between fruit knives and fork and dessert...

Hi,

As the title suggests really. What is the difference between fruit knives and forks and dessert knives and forks (often cased with mother of pearl handles etc).

I notice some have a slightly serrated edge to the top side of the blade. Would this be for fruit?
