Possibly Irish mark

Post by jwholley »

Hi--any help with this mark would be greatly appreciated. It comes off of a large, two handled tray with a pierced outer rim to an acanthine border. The tray is quite substantial, about 130 ozt. It either appears to the an unknown symbol/the letter B/a clover leaf?/an unknown symbol/fleur de lys OR it could be an unknown letter/letter B/ & (ampersand)/ unknown letter/ fleur de lys.

Any thoughts or resources for further study would be appreciated. I have already used Jackson's and Tardy as well as World Hallmarks from the Hallmark Research Institute in addition to this site, which is always most helpful.

Thank you in advance for you help!

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

I hope I don't disappoint you too much, but that is one of the many silverplate marks used by Harrison Brothers & Howson of Sheffield.

Some of their marks can be found here: http://www.925-1000.com/silverplate_H.html

Thank you so much for your help. I was afraid that might be the case as there is no discernible guaranty mark and the cadence seemed to be that of an English silverplate manufacturer. I had been unable to decipher the marks however.

Thanks again!
