Palestine Set

Post by dognose »

Hi,

Just researching this one for a friend. A set of six cups and a tray, engraved with a map of Palestine and various Holy Land scenes:

I've posted in 'Other Countries' as I have a feeling that the set was made elsewhere and imported into Palestine and then engraved locally, but I could be off base with that.

Marked 'LG' and with the fairly unusual standard of '833' ( http://www.925-1000.com/a_Standards.html )

Any thoughts regarding maker, origin, and possible use of such a set would be very much appreciated.

Hi Trev

Looking at the map we see Tel Aviv as an established City. It was founded 1909 as a Suburb of Jaffa. It became autonomus in 1921 and fully Independent City in 1936. So the engraving shows the situation after 1921, maybe after 1936. It is labelled PALESTINE. So we can carefully assume it is made before the delaration of Israel in 1947. However, it can also be a souvenier from the 50ies or the 60ies for sentimental (western) tourists. Let us assume after 1921, before 1947. However a later date is possible.

And Google "LG 833 silver" a lot of item Pop up on our famous online auction site. Judaica, the seller attribute them to "Israel", "Jerusalem" and in the 1920ies and 1930ies.
So an origin from there is possible

Hi Jörg,

The wording on the cups is as follows:

Wailing Wall

David's Tower

Avhalons Hand

Cave of Mahpela

Temple's Place

Rachel's Tomb

Hi Trev

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wailing_wall
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomb_of_Absalom
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_of_David
Cave of Mahpela????
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_Mount
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rachel%27s_Tomb

All sites referring to Judaismn. I assume a souvenier from the Holy Land. Targeting not on Christians (No sites from the New Testament) and also not on Islam (Wailing wall is of no importance for Muslim).
So a souvenier for a wealthy Jew visiting the Holy land.

Although the engraving is spelt 'Mahpela', it doubtless refers to the 'Cave of Machpelah'.
