Fabergé-style cigarette case

Post by SilverK »

I'm trying to establish any information about this beautiful sunburst cigarette case. It's very Fabergé in style but, unfortunately, is only a copy. The marks aren’t Russian and are probably American, though I can’t track down the maker. However, it's a superbly made, high quality item, so my guess is that it was made for a high-end retailer. A possible, but probably irrelevant clue, is that the inner lid has been inscribed with a dedication in German.

I would appreciate any help from the forum in identifying the maker and retailer, as well as any other information.

Many thanks in advance.

Thanks very much indeed for this reply. It answers my question very clearly, though opens up another. The inscription I referred to is dated May 1962, which aligns well with the patent filing date of Sept 1962 for 'EB'. Checking on the internet, I've found that Emil Brenk GmbH is still in operation. See: http://www.brenk-gold-silber.com/neuheiten.html

There's not much evidence on the site that they are still producing products of similar quality to my box, though they are still using a similar cabochon catch on one of their boxes.

Given that the marks look American, I would presume that Emil Brenk had a manufactory in America in 1962. If so, can anyone help identify where that was and when it operated?

I wonder they were allowed to re-use a Fabergé design, though it was during the Cold War!

I cannot exclude the possibility of an Emil Brenk facility in the US. However, I do believe that trademarks can be registered by companies that are simply selling goods or services in the US. Also, US registrations can be based on foreign trademarks.
