Austrian Silver Spoon - Help with producer

Post by paja »

Greetings,
I am new to this forum so I hope no one will mind that I'm asking for help in my first post.
These five spoons were passed onto me this year. They belonged to my distant ancestor whose initials (Cyrillic alphabet) can be seen on the handle.
Two of them have TD hallmark which I believe stands for Thomas Dub, apart from that one more - Vienna 13 1855.
Other three are mystery to me, they all have hallmark 13 and what seems to be Cyrillic letters АП (AP). In case I am not wrong about this does anyone have an idea what's the name behind those letters? Which country? What period?
All comments are more than welcome.
Thanks in advance!

Dear Paja!
Welcome to the forum!
I agree with you, 2 of your spoons from Thomas Dub.
The other pieces are very interesting: I think we can't find a solution in this forum, and I don't even know a good source to do that.
But maybe your spoon made from a country in the middle Europe, where used the lot system, and the cyrillic alphabet at the same time. One of this country could be Serbia in the 19. century:

I think, your spoon could from a little city, without real official hallmarks, so the maker made his own marks.
But don't forget, I'm just guessing.
Best regards!

Greetings Krisztián,
Thanks for welcoming me and offering help, I appreciate it!
Even though I'm from Serbia it didn't even cross my mind that it could be something "domestic".
Also thanks for sharing that link, very interesting, not really my area of expertise but this is the first time I see hallmarks like that.
If you ever need some help with translation from Serbian please don't hesitate to ask.
Kind regards,
Radmilo

The only known silversmiths in Serbia (mid and second half of the 19th century) were Стојић, Николић and Богдановић (full name struck in the mark).

Always with ``13`` Loth and sometimes with Serbian marks depicted in Tardy. They must have been apprentices in Hungary and adopted ``13`` Loth as the standard. Also, they often imported spoons from Hungary and cut off the middle of the handle to insert their own filigree work.
Serbian silversmiths in Austria Hungary have never used Cyrillic alphabet (e.g. Gabriel – Gavrilo Markovitch in Zombor).

Thanks, may I ask what's your opinion on this one then? So far unknown Serbian silversmith? Or not at all Serbian? I am pretty sure that's АП hallmark.
It can't be Russian.

It’s not Russian for sure (Loth 13) and it’s made before 1867. Maker’s mark looks like `` АЛ`` оr ``АП`` Most probably made in The Kingdom of Hungary (provincial silversmiths whose guilds are not well documented). Cannot be Central Banat District Közép-bánsági körzet because Nagybecskerek (Zrenjanin) had it’s guild and the mark is well documented. Cannot be either Zombor and Neusatz, Újvidék – Novi Sad (marks are registered). On the other hand, one cannot exclude a silversmith working in Serbia.

meaning there was no guild there.

Thanks again!
Here's one more piece from later period, also made by Thomas Dub.
