Duplicated Austrian import marks

Hello I came recently across a souvenir spoon made by the Germany based “Antiko” silver/silver plating concern. Some photos are below.



I know from a previous post that the 800 indicates the spoon to be solid silver 800 parts silver in 1000. It is not however a souvenir spoon from a German venue but from Jnnsbruck (I assume Innsbruck) in Austria and carries 2 other small marks on its stem. The Austrian silver marks section of this website confirms these to be post 1922 Austrian import marks. The “S” means “Salzberg” was the assay centre and “4” confirms “800” parts silver but is it usual to have duplicated marks? Could the second mark be a way of confirming a payment of a “tax” as had previously been done on some early British silverware? Is it dating evidence for my spoon? Or was it just a mistake?

Hi Fishless,
A German made spoon and exported to Austria, the first Austrian import mark indicates import duty had been paid, the 2nd import mark could indicate import duty had been refunded upon export.
However needs to be confirmed by more knowledgeable members of our forum.
