Clueless - Spoon Tea Set???

Post by nrandrews »

I am very new into trying to identifying silver makings. My great grandmother and grandmother both collected spoons which were recently given to me. My grandmother left me a vast amount of books other spoon material. I am pretty sure my grandmother was a member many groups as I have a great deal of literature different groups. I have been continuing to educate myself but have been at a loss over trying to figure out who, where and when this set came from. Any help would be appreciated in identifying this spoon set. If better pictures I can attempt to take better ones. Some of the spoons makers are more visible than others providing detail.

These are known as "apostle spoons". The hallmark shows that it was assayed in London during the assay year 1899/1900 and that the maker was William Hutton & Sons Ltd.

Phil,

Thank you. I thought it was made in London because of the Lion mark, is that correct? I believe the P marking should provide the date, is that correct? I have no idea about the last making denotes. Any chance you might be able to educate me as what that marking denotes? Thank you in advance with any help you might provide, it is greatly appreciated.

Best Wishes,

Nick

From left to right:

- Uncrowned leopard's head: mark of the London Assay Office (rotate your image 90º clockwise to see it in its correct orientation)

- Lion passant: symbol for sterling silver (925/1000 purity) in English hallmarks (rotate 180º)

- Date letter "d" (rotate 90º clockwise); in this style and punch shape it is the date code for 1899/1900

- Sponsor's mark of William Hutton & Sons Ltd. Here is a clearer image of their mark:

Well I was way off with the letter. I thought the letter was a "P". Thank you again.
