Hallmark on old pocket watch. French?

Post by argentregime »

Hi Stewart. This is a very nice looking watch with what's called a Swiss lever escapement (so far as I can see) as you may well know. It has a certain art deco deel to it and my guess is that it dates to the 1930s but it just could possibly be 1950s when the 'futurist' style in art did generate some art deco type styles which can sometimes deceive/confuse.

The mark you have highlighted is in fact the maker's mark though I am not familiar with it. I am sure with some research you will be able to trace the maker.

Unfortunately, I cannot see any indication from your jpgs that the casing is gold or silver. It is a mixture of gold coloured metal and what looks like steel. This would be fairly common for the period of 'the hungry 30s' when gold and silver was less commonly used in watch casings than had been the case in previous decades.

I can see no obvious hallmarks. You may want to check with a glass around the inside rim of the casing with the back off and see if anything is stamped in - sometimes the marks can be tiny. On the back casing cover there is a tiny mark on the rim at the top which could be a HM but equally just a scratch - I can't quite see.

Hope helps. Rgds.
