Need help identifying hallmarks.

Post by antieksilver »

Hello,
I just started in this forum. I have an early silver cup that I would like to ask your assistance to identify the hallmarks. The cup is probably from the 17th century or early 18th. I initially thought that it may be Scandinavian. It is well marked with two touch marks, one on the body (handle side) and the second one on the base. Thank you for all information or suggestions.

It certainly looks as though it has passed through Germany...

"The zigzag line, known by the unlikely name of a "diet" in English, is called a "Tremolierstich" in German. (I like the term "proofstrike", which I see occasionally in English translations of German catalogues; much better than the peculiar "diet".) It was produced when an assayer removed a bit of silver with a rowel-like device in order to test the content for purity."

Thanks for the insight. We have the same control system in Belgium during the 17th and 18th century and the name is also very close, "striche". The same goes for the Netherlands, Sweden. I was hoping to receive some info about the origin.
