unknown mark

Post by dolpheus »

Hello, friends

can somebody help me with identification of these knives? I am absolutely out.
I have set of six similar (identical) pieces. Handle is solid silver sheet, not only plated (scratch test).
But the only one mark on handles is "40". There is nothing more. Also iron blade is totally unmarked.
Strange to me is also pewter or lead alloy between handle and blade. I dont have seen soldered piece never before.
Soldering is perfectly made, similar on all 6 pieces, so i dont know, it is later repair, or it is original?

Many thanks, i welcome every comment

M.

Hi,
Looks like silver-plated (``40``).
Soft solder tin-lead alloy is not uncommon to fix blades.
Cheers

Many thanks, AG2012.
I must apologize for this confusing post. After repeated and deep scratch test with schwerters reagens, it is obvious handle is only plated.
I was confused firstly due to thick plating - i suppose silver plate No.40 is not wery thick and flat scratch is sufficient - evidently not.
Please admin to move this post to the plate section, thanks.
