I have this unusual sterling Gorham clam shell case with a compass inside, has a loop on top for attaching to a chain perhaps? The hallmark dates the piece to 1886.
My question to you is.................what is it? What purpose did it serve?
Gorham Sterling - What is it?

It's missing a collapsible silver cup, a silk tassel would have been at the top - would have been tucked into a pocket for travel, the hunt, other sporting activities, etc.

If at all interested, here is a clip from an 1888 Gorham catalog, it's described as 'collapsion or pocket cup with case'...
