The marks on this cup and cover are the 1718 date mark, the makers mark for William Fleming and two Britannia marks but no lions head erased mark. Any ideas why other than a forgetful assayer?
Just a bad day at the office, it's nothing more than human error. But what is perhaps surprising that such errors were not more commonplace considering the thousands of pieces that were marked every year. The assay office markers on the whole were extremely accurate.
