Can anyone identify an unusual hallmark London?

Post by mintymin »

Hi
I have an unusual hallmark on a knife.
I have a suspicion it may have been made out of another piece as it has a hallmark on it I can't find.
It has very clear London hallmarks for 1991 and at the side another hallmark of three crowns. Could this have been on an original piece but would the asset office allow it to stay on? Has anyone seen it before? Is it a commemorative hallmark?
Thank you

Hi,
For commemorative marks see here.
https://www.assayofficelondon.co.uk/hal ... -hallmarks
Have seen several 1991 pieces; none of them had ``three crown`` mark.
Cannot identify sponsor`s (maker`s) mark. It`s possibly an addition to ``MA`` mark.

hi everyone
I have just found this information about this hallmark that I asked about a long while ago. The three crowns or coronets is for the Guild of Hull silversmiths. Found on an auctioneers site purely by accident.
(Forgive me if this is something you already know)

Abraham Barachin was the last Hull silversmith to use the Hull mark of three ducal coronets in around 1706.
However in 1983 the Assay Offices of Great Britain and the City of Kingston upon Hull granted the Guild of Hull Silversmiths permission to use the City's Coat of Arms as an additional mark on pieces they produced.

Hi mintymin,

Would it be possible to replace the missing images in this topic?

Hi mintymin,

Many thanks for reposting the images, it is appreciated.

A similar process is used by the Sheffield Assay Office for Chester made items if desired by the submitter.
