British Crest Question

Post by admin »

Hi,
The piece was made in London 1817. Does this version of the crown indicate a marquess and is there any hope of tracking down further info from a crest this simple?
Thanks, Tom

l cannot see the crown very clearly (not your photo) but it does look like a strawberry leaf in front which is correct, but then should have a ball either side of the front leaf and then a half leaf to the side of the balls, then you are correct in saying it is a Marquess Crown.

Hi Nigel,
Thanks for the information. I read it as a strawberry leaf in center, 2 strawberry leaves in 2/3 profile on the sides. While the inbetweens are not exactly orbs, they are at least circular - marquess was the closest match. I had hoped that the geometric device below the crown, which certainly seems original, was unusual enough for an ID, not being the usual eagle or arm with sword etc..etc.

I have a copy of Fairbairn's Crests of the Families of Great Britain & Ireland, and I must say I've found it completely useless. Not only are there multiple families for each crest but more often than not I can't find a certain crest in it. The crests are listed in no order which makes the search even more tedious.
I don't have it with me Tom, but I don't recall that unusual crest. I'm not even sure what it is.
