Strange mark Sterling ID?

Post by Cynth339 »

Hi all,

I bought a ring today that says STERLING and has a little mark that looks like an oval with wings. I polished it up with a wipe and it still looks like a goldish color rather than silver - is that normal?

Here is the mark! If this picture is too small, you can go directly to the website at http://img206.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1003282pd6.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Thanks in advance! Cynthia

I believe that's a V in a diamond shape. That mark was used by the Vargas Manufacturing Company, Providence, Rhode Island. Founded in the 1940's and might still be in business today. Although they did produce silver jewelry, they specialized in gold plated jewelry.
