Silversmith name - Moscow, 1850
Hi,
I have this tobacco box, which I believe was made in Moscow in 1850.
Please find below the marks found inside :
Could someone :
Provide me with the name of the silversmith
Confirm that my reading of the other marks is correct :
84 in a square : essay mark (84 zolotniks)
A, a point, K, over "1850" : essay mark for Andrey Antonovich Kovalsky (Moscow, 1821-56), 1850 ?
Saint-George beating the dragon in a rectangle : mark for Moscow
AГ : unidentified silversmith
Thanks for your help !

Could be Abram Golikov in Moscow around 1850. No guarantees given!
Re: Silversmith name - Moscow, 1850
Hi Qrt.S,
Thanks a lot for your proposal.
Do you know if the name "Golikov" start with a "Г" letter when writtent using cyrillic alphabet ?
Can you please tell us your source about the existence of this silversmith : a book about Russian silvermith during 19e c. maybe ?
Thanks

The Russian silver books have been discussed in these sites in the past. Please use the search function and you will find books listed. However, the "problem" is that many of the books are copies of copies of copies.... That has resulted in an unfortunate problem i.e. that they contain quite a lot of direct faults, misspellings etc. One must be careful when reading them. Do not rely on one book's info only check and recheck from other sources too! One rather reliable book is Postikova's book! Unfortunately it also contains some "mistakes".

Hi AG2012,
Thanks for your precision. Except if there is another silvermith from Moscow working aroun 1850 and whose initial would be А Г, it seems a very good "candidate" !
Thanks also to you Qrt.S : the fact that several books are more or less "copies or copies" is interresting to know.
I do not know if it is specifically the case for Russian silver, but if there is no or to few researchers, professional or fanas, interrested in silver, than we are limited to old publications that have limis and sometines perpetuate faslse information.

Exactly that is the case.
Anyway, like to add that a master in the same town in Russia could not use parallel a similar mark or initials that was already used and registered to another master (in the same town/location).
