Hello
My mothr bought me this very nice cigarette-end (I think that is the name in English ; in French, "fume-cigarete")
It is made of amber and silver with a guilt end; the detailing is very fine
It is hallmarked with a greyhound head and a 3 ; it is Austrian, I believe, but I cannot remember the silver purity of the "3".
And here is the makers mark : JH or JA.
Can you please help me with dating and maker?
Thanks in advance
François
Austrian Cigarette-end dating and maker ?
Hello,
the dogs head hallmark was used from April 1872 to Mai 1922
the "3" on the left side stands for 800 Silver. The "A" on the right side stands for Vienna. This Hallmark is the tax-hallmark.
The stile of this item is Jugendstil (Art nouveau)and should have been produced ca.1900-1915
The makersmark I don`t know .(don`t have the vienna books )
best regards
Silvy

Hello, it is not possible to exactly ascribe this to a certain maker, as the mark is incomplete. One would have to clearly see the sign between the two letters. The Viennese list of gold- and silversmiths has no match for “J A” with this kind of frame, so I guess it is “J H“. Might be either J. Hoburka or J. Hügler. Probably the latter, as the first seems to have been a maker of gold chains. Best wishes,Bahner
