Museo Civico di Asolo
The current Civic Museum occupies the Palazzo del Vescovado and the building of the Loggia della Ragione; the latter was built during the 15th century to house the minor Venetian representatives and the Podestà in his capacity as administrator of justice. The Loggia was frescoed around the middle of the 16th century.
The first nucleus of the museum collections was formed at the beginning of the nineteenth century thanks to the donations of Domenico Manera and Giovan Battista Sartori Canova; but it was with the bequests of the heirs of Andrea Manera (1880) and Pacifico Scomazzetto (1888) that the Museum was officially established. This first nucleus of artifacts is exhibited in the Sala della Ragione where the Town Hall was also located in that period. Since then, private donations have intensified, considerably increasing the institute's artistic and historical heritage. The recent rearrangement of the Museum houses the Archaeological Section (ground floor) , the Art Gallery (first floor) , the Cathedral Treasury, the Caterina Cornaro, Eleonora Duse and Freya Stark sections (second floor).
In the Treasury section of the Cathedral (Room 17) some sacred vestments belonging to the Asolo Cathedral are exhibited, probably dating back to the early medieval diocese but soon incorporated (10th century) into the Diocese of Treviso. The Cathedral, which still retained the title of bishopric, was always the object of particular attention and privileges, starting with Caterina Cornaro up to various popes, including Pius X, Giuseppe Sarto, particularly attached to this church.
The Freya Stark Section (Room 14) which collects various objects and photographs of the famous English traveler and writer who had her favorite home here in Asolo. The Section dedicated to Caterina Cornaro (Room 15) houses paintings, documents, drawings and objects that arrived at the Museum mostly thanks to nineteenth-century donations. The collection among other things it preserves the testamentary papyrus with the Queen's Donation in favor of his brother Giorgio. Room 16 is reserved for Eleonora Duse, even if some spaces are left to the memory of Gabriele D'Annunzio, of the 19th century Asolo, of the English poet Robert Browning. The material relating to Eleonora Duse, deposited at the Museum by her daughter Enrichetta, is of various types: portraits and photographs of the actress, documents, handwritten notes and letters, prizes and personal items, family souvenirs, books, home furnishings, objects used on stage or in the dressing room, clothes and shoes, sketches and photographs for environmental studies.
