Knife from the 18th century, Schagen. Maker?

Post by Vantlicht »

This knife is from Schagen but the maker is unsure. It is marked, but in my opinion not so clear. Maybe the marks looks familiar for someone? There is only one mark like a r.

You say from the city of Schagen ( province North Holland); the iron blade marked with the Schagen iron knife guild maker's mark, a standing stick/boat hook and a crescent moon. Antique silver travel knife. So-called "Schager knife" The first knife makers (iron blade) mentioned around 1570 in Schagen, where they were mainly active in the sixteenth, seventeenth and also in the eighteenth century. The last knife maker closed his business around 1850.

The maker's mark

The maker's mark could be a crescent moon in circle for; Cornelis Hanse, registered in Alkmaar, 1765-1780. He also used the maker's mark CH in rectangle.
Cornelis Hanse apprentice January 8, 1748 with his father Jacobus Hanse, became master in 1765. He probably succeeded his father who died on December 25, 1765. Note in Dutch goldsmiths and silversmiths marks and names prior to 1812 Karel Citroen is mentioned next to Cornelis Hansen from Alkmaar a certain Cornelis Hansen from Amsterdam. However, the latter does not appear in K.A. Citroen, Amsterdamse Zilversmeden en hun merken, Amsterdam 1975.
