18th century knife in leather case, with hallmark

Post by Vantlicht »

This knife in its orginal leather case caused me a headache. The hallmark is not that bad, but I don't know where to start searching.
So maybe an expert on this forum knows more?

Hi, the maker of the steel/iron knife blade is F(riedrich). Herder. His maker's mark; a spade preceded by its brand name, located in Solingen Germany.

In theory the silver knife handle could also have been made in Germany. Although his company was a known producer for the Dutch market. Herder's knive blades are introduced in the Malay Archipelago by the Dutch East India Company
Given the engraving, I estimate it to be late 18th, early 19th century, empire style. The maker's mark, to me is much too unclear to decipher.
