Bowl: T90 Again but with Maker, A Hunting

Post by Traintime »

Base design of elephant with two stamps…first is T-over-90 inside jug shape or inverted spade. Second is FOO or FOC with double dots under middle initial, all in tri-lobe or clubs shape. Relief all around with hunting or defense scenes having lions, dog, gunmen, swordmen, trees…all seemingly SE Asia. Bowl is crush damaged but not broken. Was very blackened with much dirt down in the detail giving the impression of some age to it. Anyone got a sense on this one? TIA Reference- Tola 90.

I’ll just point out that we seem to have the appearance of a centering punch within the elephant’s body, presumably an indicator of hand-raised work (?), which might make this sample useful to understanding the technique employed by some of these unidentified craftsmen. And the upper rim is not quickly folded over but forms a deep bending/roll that tucks far inside the top…perhaps a lid was once associated or maybe it was expected to be a rest for a glass insert?

Found…Bombay. Believed working circa 1880-1890 era. See Large cup with Hunting Scene in Bombay section of this blog:

Maker mark here was incomplete and should have four letters as found on the other T.90 item.
