Dutch Zwolle salt cellars (18th century)

Post by Pepperonicini »

Found a pair of these salt cellars. My literature suggests the town mark for Zwolle from ~1721 and based on the date letter this would be 1719. I believe the 'GR KEUR' marking signifies first quality silver. I believe the oval with circles to be a makers mark. The only thing I could find similar was Adrianus Beeldemaker https://keuren.zilver.nl/zilvermerken-v ... -1800/560/, but the dates he was active are outside of the dates for the city mark.

If anyone is more familiar with these hallmarks, I would appreciate the help narrowing this down further. Thank you.

Zwolle silver open salt cellar, in the Louis XVI style, ca. 1765- ca. 1790, shapes and decorations are symmetrical. The shapes are smooth and simple in line, on them are small decorations, pearl edges.
The year letter D under a dot for 1791. For the Zwolle year letters see City of Zwolle; viewtopic.php?p=82869#p82869

GR KEUR "Grote Keur " to indicate 1st standard silver 934/1000

The city hallmark for silver objects from Zwolle is based on the city's coat of arms: a shield with a 'Zwolle' cross, under crown (1st standard or "grote keur").

Maker's mark a bust for Adrianus Beeldemaker, he also used the letters AB in cartouche.
Adrianus Beeldemaker (worked from 1735-1791)
Adrianus was born in Zwolle, baptized in the Lutheran church 7-2-1706, as the son of Dirk Beeldemaker ( silversmith in Zwolle worked from 1697-1719 ) and Geertruyd van Diepen. He married Bartha Willemina Brand from Deventer in Twello in June 1734. In April 1735 he had come with a certificate from Amsterdam, where he had apparently spent part of his apprenticeship. The couple had 12 children, 7 of whom died at a young age. Beeldemaker died in 1791.

Peter,

Thank so you so much for your thoughtful answer.

Two questions for you:

1. The book I referenced (Millers Encyclopedia), appears to show this town marking for 1721. I was curious if this is just simply wrong or if it is just not a comprehensive list of town markings?

2. Are there any books (in English, ideally) that you can recommend specifically for Dutch silver references? I also found some other 18th century (one piece from Amsterdam and another from a smaller town) silver along with these and have located the marks, but I would like to have something more detailed in print for the future.

Miller's Encyclopedia of World Silver Marks by Judith Miller, is not a good reference work and is unfortunately full of errors. The marks of Zwolle are also not described correctly.

Again the town mark of Zwolle is based on the coat of arms. Town mark Zwolle crowned for 1st standard or “grote keur” 934/1000 and town mark without crown, 3rd standard silver 833/1000 fineness. Town mark with R.D short for ‘Rijks Daalder’ (coinsilver) 892/1000 fineness, 2nd standard.

As far as I know there are no reference books about Dutch guild silver in English. Regarding city hallmarks and the corresponding year letters, the book Goud en zilver merken van Voet, L. B. Gans Premsela & Hamburger is a must have. In the book no master marks are shown regarding the silver guilds in the various Dutch cities.
