Sheffield Hallmark - unknown maker R&B

Post by karinelke »

G'day from Downunder. I have a sterling silver platter, for which I would like to know the details. I have found out that it is Sheffield, 1801, but I couldn't find any information about the maker. I would be very grateful if someone could help me. THANKS !

Hmm, I would like a photo?\. Why you may ask? Because R & B, out of SHeffield, is usually Roberts & Belk, who produced a wide variety, but whose mark was entered only in 1892 (about 91 years too late it may be said).

Is there a Duty Mark on the piece? (i,e, a head facing left and right?)

Oh, and g'day as well :)

Thank you very much for your kind reply!!!

I have done some more research (on your site) - should have used my brain before asking, my father always told me so... - and came up with a similar answer. The stamps on the plate are: R&B, crown, passant, C.
There is no Duty Mark.

Now, my conclusion (which is that of a total ignorant concerning silver markings) is that it is Roberts & Belk, but the year 1870, which, according your information is not possible...

Unfortunately I am a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to pictures, hosting and all that...

But, thank you very much again !
Regards
Karin

Duty Mark only existed until 1890. WHat shape shield is the C in? I assume it is upper case. A "capital C" is either 1895, 1920, 1945 or 1971.
