Hi,

This is an easy one (well for me).
What is it and what was it used for?

Hi Trev,

Not much to do with tea I'm afraid.
The front engraving might give some clues.

heh,

No not tabacco either.
It is a very local thing, northern Dutch (Frisia).

A 17th century marriage casket (knottekistje). If I understand correctly, it was offered containing coins and jewels, to the prospective bride to accept or refuse. A step up from the traditional knotted cloth (knottedoek).
