This item is in the shape of a carnation. Made in the mid-19th century.
I'd estimate the length at about 4 inches (10.16 cm).
It does serve a purpose other than decoration.
What is it called?

A posy holder is a good guess Miles, but this is not one.
Sorry, but this is the only picture of the piece in the book.

Yes Trev, this is a vinaigrette.
