Snuff box?

I'm guessing this is a snuff-box. It has a carnelian in a sterling silver frame for a lid, and it safely dates back to early 20th century, or before. It has no hallmarks. Can you help me find out more about it? Is it possible it was made in Colonial India, because it came into my hands from India.
