Swiss (?) Watch

Post by optimuscrime »

Hello all,

I have a very old wristwatch -- the seller advertised it as circa 1913 and the style (wire lugs etc.) seems to bear this out. But I'm interested in the origin and era because there is no signature on the dial or the movement itself. On the inside of the back of the case, there are four markings. I've fashioned a crude drawing to post here as my photographs did not turn out well.

There is a '925' in an oblong circle -- which I understand to mean sterling silver. Next to it is a U (where the serifs extend outward only), surrounded by four bars that form a sort of circle around the letter. Between and underneath these is a rounded square with what is either a very curvy 'S' or possibly an '8'. Finally, in very plain numbers (serial?) there is '14809'.

Can anyone offer any clues as to the country of origin, era or any other detail?

Dear Optimuscrime, These hallmarks show that this watch was legally imported in the UK and have been assayed in London probably in 1913. There should normally be other hallmarks to show the origin. Hope this has helped. Best Regards. Myriam
