Austria-Hungary 1852, D8

Post by admin »

Hello,
Would like to identify this town mark and of course the maker's name would be nice to have.
Thanks, Tom

I'll have to do some digging to see if I can find the maker, but in 1852 the Austrian Imperial assay office code D8 was for the Polish town of Tarnopol, then under Austro-Hungarian control and part of Galicia, and which is now known as Ternopil and is part of the independent Ukraine.

Hi Blakstone,
Thanks for your help. Were the codes variable or would D8 be for Tarnopol regardless of the year mark?

Regards, Tom

Hi Tom, D8 for Tarnopol was introduced with the law of 1824 (effective as of April 1st of that year) and used until the new law of 1866 (effective as of January 1st, 1867), regardless of the year the piece was marked. Since 1867 Tarnopol used F4. Best wishes, Bahner
