Found scuba diving off southeast coast of Florida - have been unable to identify, item is solid silver 5 oz. with a hole at the top. Only thing that has been mentioned is the possiblity that it was a sailor's pay bar, hence the hole to wear around neck. No identifying marks at all - have looked extensively.

Hello Clews-

I read an article on just this sort of thing once, it refered to Spanish returning home with their new found wealth. If the could wear it as a jewlry piece on their person, then it was not taxable. So as you can imagine they would be wearing a lot of jewlry. I don't know if this fits this catgory, just a thought.

Regards- Byron

Thank you Byron for your reply - for some reason I keep trying to reply to you but have been having trouble. Your info on the jewelry wearing makes sense, I have researched extensively and all other silver bars seem to be marked but not this one. Thank you.
